Wykład HS Academy – Optical Coherence Tomography for examination of artworks

Piotra Targowskiego (UMK) w czwartek 26 października o 16:00 (naszego czasu).

Abstract:

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) originates from medical diagnostics and is a non-contact and non-invasive optical sectioning technique. It offers a micrometer-level in-depth resolution and, therefore, is well suited for the investigation of fine sub-surface details of structures that absorb infrared light moderately, such as varnishes, glazes, and underdrawings of paintings on canvas, reverse painting on glass, glazes on porcelain and faience, jade, historical glass, and many others. Images obtained by OCT (the tomograms) are usually presented conveniently as cross-sectional views, similar to microscopic photographs of cross-sections of samples collected from the object.
A brief introduction to the technique and essentials of the construction of the OCT instruments will be presented, and an overview of commercially available instruments will also be given. The advantages and limitations of the technique will be addressed, and a key to reading tomograms will be provided. Then, using examples from our practice, it will be shown how the OCT technique may be used to examine the structure of various artworks, trace former conservation attempts, and help monitor some restoration procedures.

You will learn

  • How to read the OCT tomograms
  • Which structures can and which cannot be examined with OCT
  • What heritage objects can be examined with OCT
  • How OCT can be useful for the restoration of artworks
  • How to choose the commercial system best suited to your needs

Key topics we’ll cover

  • OCT concept
  • Performance and parameters of the OCT instruments
  • Application of OCT to examination of the structure of artworks
  • Utilisation of OCT in the restoration practice
